Specs Revealed for Tegra 3 Armed Cloud Gaming Wikipad

A company called Wikipad is working toward the not-terribly-distant release of an Android tablet that features an add-on controller that allows gaming on the go without requiring a touch screen control scheme.

According to a report at VentureBeat, the device will include a 10.1-inch IPS display (a nice increase from the 7-inch display that was debuted at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show) featuring 1280x800 resolution. Despite that size, the tablet will weigh only 560 grams, making it nearly 40 grams lighter than the iPad 2.

The Wikipad tablet uses the NVIDIA Tegra 3 1.4GHz quad-core processor, along with 1GB of DDR2 RAM.

As far as internal storage goes, 16GB is the current minimum. Fraser Townley, President of Sales at Wikipad, told VentureBeat that “We will not go down, we will only go up.” Most tablets ship with 16GB at present, so the worst-case scenario is that Wikipad will be average in that regard.

While the full list of system specs paints the picture of a capable tablet device, the Wikipad’s main selling point is clearly its controller add-on, which will ship with every unit and connect via a proprietary connection. The controller shell features four face buttons, two sets of triggers, dual analog sticks and Start and Select buttons, making it roughly equivalent to a current-gen console controller or perhaps even the gamepad for Nintendo’s upcoming Wii U hardware.

James Bower, the company’s president, wasn’t able to reveal a specific launch date, but he did indicate that the device will arrive later this year. More information should soon follow.
