Game Industry Reacts to NVIDIA Project Shield

NVIDIA co-founder and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang saved the best for last at the company’s CES 2013 press conference, unveiling Project SHIELD to over 500 journalists in attendance at the Palms Casino.

“Project Shield creates the ability to enjoy video games on any device at any time at any place and on any screen,” said Huang. “It’s going to usher in the same types of experiences that we were able to enjoy with movies and music via the cloud, but with video games.”

While attendees at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas will get a first look at gaming on Project SHIELD throughout the week, game makers were given a preview of the new portable gaming device last year.

The real-time render of Project SHIELD that was featured in the video was running on Unreal Engine 4 technology. Epic Games, the company behind Unreal tech, has worked closely with NVIDIA on project SHIELD.

"With Project SHIELD, NVIDIA brings an uncompromising, high-performance console experience to mobile devices,” said Mark Rein, vice president and co-founder of Epic Games. “Amazing games including Real Boxing and HAWKEN, which utilize the latest Unreal Engine technology, look fantastic on Project SHIELD. This is just the beginning, and we're truly excited to see what more Unreal Engine developers will do with so much horsepower in such a compact gaming device."

One of the Unreal games featured during the press conference was Adhesive Games’ HAWKEN. The game, which is being published by Meteor Entertainment, featured a live multiplayer demo showcasing Mech shooter combat.

“Coming from the openness of a PC platform, we love how accessible Project SHIELD is, and the flexibility it gives gamers everywhere,” said Bill Wagner, chief production officer at Meteor Entertainment. "Project SHIELD gives us the cutting-edge ability to bring a huge free-to-play PC game like HAWKEN to the handheld gaming audience."

A big component of Project SHIELD is the easy access to the full catalog of Tegrazone-recommended and other Android games. Tegra 4 games will push Android even further, according to game developers.

"Shadowgun and Dead Trigger showed how Tegra can redefine mobile gaming on Android,” said Marek Rabas, chief executive officer of MADFINGER Games. “Project SHIELD's performance has allowed us to bring an even better experience with Dead Trigger 2, debuting first on Tegra 4 devices. Our fans are going to love it."

"Project SHIELD has changed how we approach mobile game development,” said Seunghee Do, co-founder at OneQ Soft. “Tegra 4 helped us create Bloodsword -- a new game debuting with the highest resolution textures, graphics and shading we've ever seen on a portable device."

Stine Waern, chief executive officer at Ravn Studio AS, is amazed by the gaming potential of this device. He said, “Project SHIELD is by far the fastest mobile device we've worked on and it lets us put console quality graphics on a handheld device."

"Thanks to Project SHIELD's performance, we're able to use the same quality textures and shaders in Rochard as on the PC version,” said Jan Achrenius, chief executive officer at Recoil Games. “We're super excited to bring Rochard to Project SHIELD, the first time it's ever been playable on a mobile device."

"Put simply, Project SHIELD is an amazing leap forward, enabling us to create console-quality visuals previously unthinkable on a mobile platform,” said Arden Aspinall, chief executive officer and project lead at TickTock Games Ltd.
