More Games Planned to Connect With Second Screen
Activision and Bungie unveiled Destiny, the new cross-platform connected world shooter from the creators of Halo. The game, which has been confirmed for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and next gen devices, has been described as an experience that will connect across additional platforms.
The new Halo 4 game connects gamers to NVIDIA-powered tablets and smartphones through Xbox Smartglass. Activision has also embraced the second screen with Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, weighed in on the importance of second screen gaming for the industry today and moving forward.
“We were ahead of this curve,” said Hirshberg. “A couple of years ago we introduced the idea of using a second screen with Call of Duty Elite with a companion app on tablets and mobile. It allows players to be able to mod out from the tablet into the console to do things like join a group or equip your fighter while you’re on your commute to work from you smartphone. Now others are following suit in some of the things that we were the first to do. It’s an important innovation.”
Mobile has become a bigger part of the overall gaming industry, but it’s also opening up a new way for big franchises to keep fans connect away from their PCs and consoles.
“We all have a connected device in our pocket these days, if not multiple connected devices in our lives,” said Hirshberg. “We live in a franchise world where people are spending more and more time on fewer properties and that’s not just true in games. It’s true in movies. It’s true in books. It’s true in most forms of entertainment these days. When you look at the top ten of just about anything it’s dominated by status franchises and sequels. With that as a backdrop, I think that providing people the ability to connect in with the games they love, the content they love, the characters they love, with the community that surrounds that content, is really important. We’re using mobile as a way to enhance our core franchises.”
